South Korean mountaineer, Um
Hong-Gil has reached the summit of all 14, 8000m peaks in the world. In fact he
has climbed the 16 highest points on Earth. These are Everest (1988), K2,
Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Nanga, Parbat,
Annapurna, Gasherbrum I, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II, Shishapangma and the central
summit of Shishapangma.
Um Hong-Gil was awarded the
Himalayan Crown when he completed the 14 highest peaks in 2000. He is the first
South Korean and the seventh climber in the world to hold this distinction. He
is the first person to climb the highest 16 peaks.
Um Hong-Gil continues to climb
strong and guide fellow climbers to the summits of the world’s highest peaks. He
lead successful expeditions up Everest in 2002 and 2003. He has climbed both the
North and South Sides of the Everest. Um Hong-Gil has stood on top of Everest
three times.
