Serge Koenig, a famous French guide,
summited Everest on Oct 13, 1988 via the standard South East Ridge
Serge was caught in storm of
controversy in 1997 when, his planned Franco-Chinese Everest expedition
was postponed due to the belief that his expedition was endorsing the
Chinese presence in Tibet. The expedition was planning to attempt a
new route on the North face of Everest using fixed ropes and oxygen to
attempt to overcome a rocky spur at around 7000 meters.
