Steve Gall
was a member of the American climbing team during the 1990 Everest Peace
Climb. The Peace Climb consisted of three teams, American, Soviet Union and
Chinese. Aside from being a mission to bring peace and show that these teams
could work together despite political differences, the goal was to begin a
cleaning and clearing process of the debris left on the mountain over the
years.
Earth
Day had been picked as the day to summit to symbolize a
new era on the mountain, one of respect and working
towards achieving lower impact climbing techniques. Jim
Whittaker was the Peace Climb leader and worked hard to
overcome differences in climbing styles and language
barriers.
The climb proved to be a
success as there were no fatalities and over 20 team members reached the
summit. They traveled in groups of 6, two people from each country on a team.
Though the mission was exhausting Steve was able to follow through with the
goals by burying, and hauling out many years worth of mountain trash.
