Finnish climber Veikka
Gustafsson has been to the summit of Mount Everest three times. He first reached
the summit back in 1993 under the leadership of Rob Hall. He climbed the
mountain again in 2002 and most recently on May 17, 2004. During the last climb
he was accompanied by Ed Viesturs, David Breashears, Robert Schauer, Jimmy Chin,
Amy Bullard, and seven Sherpas. The team was making a film for Working Title
Films and Universal Studios.
Aside from Veikka’s extended
trekking in the Himalaya, he has also made many first ascents in Antarctica.
During one trip with fellow Finland climber Patrick Degerman over a 17 day ski
trip they made over five first ascents. During that Antarctica ski trip the men
had good luck as they discovered an old food stash at the base of Mount Gardner
from 1966. The food had been put there by John Evans. The two men enjoyed the
extra candy bars and a mashed potato meal, which they cooked right at base camp
to help fuel them to the top.
Helping his friend Ed Viesturs
achieve his goal of climbing all 14 of the world’s highest peaks, Veikka
accompanied Ed to the top of two 8000m peaks last year.
Veikka has so far conquered 9 of the world´s 14
8000 m peaks without extra oxygen.
