The Sherpas of Everest Series: Sonam Gyalchhen Sherpa

Sonam Gyalchhen Sherpa was born in 1943 summited Everest May 7th, 1973 on the Italian Expedition led by Guido Monzino. He currently lives in Kathmandu.

In 1996 he led the first all-Nepali expedition to clean up rubbish from Everest. The expedition hauled away 4,400 pounds of decades-old trash from Mount Everest. This was the fifth attempt to clean up the mountain over the past decade, worked on the South side of the mountain for the 25-day cleanup expedition started on May 6 and ended on May 31. This was 23 years after his successful summit in 1973.

1973: Italian Expedition. Another huge expedition with sixty-four members led by Guido Monzino. Helicopters are used to shuttle equipment past the Khumbu Icefall and one hundred Sherpas are also employed. Eight climbers succeed via the South Col Route. Italian Summiters were Rinaldo Carrel, Mirko Minuzzo, Fabrizio Innamorati, Virginio Epis, and Claudio Benedetti. Lhakpa Tenzing Sherpa, Sambhu Tamang Sherpa and Sonam Gyalchhen Sherpa also reach the Summit.
